Amy: Deadly Hands of Shon-Ju Review

The Deadly Hands of Shon-Ju. Writer, Jeremy Barlow (Star Wars) is the fifth installment in a series of Clone Wars mini graphic novels.  As you might have guessed from the cover, the story centers on Jedi Aayla Secura.  She is sent on a covert mission to bring a war profiteer and all around bad guy, Atuma Duum, to justice.  The enemy learns of her plan though, and her small clone escort is wiped out.  She only escapes capture and death because of the help of a mysterious stranger.

The stranger is a former Temple trainee, but after being told he wasn't suited for Jedi ways, Shon-Ju left Coruscant.  He started his own school.  He trains other Force misfits.  Aayla is surprised and sure she can help him see the benefits of finishing his training.  They put aside their differences on the subject to go after Duum together and complete Aayla's mission.

I picked up this book as soon as I saw the cover at my local comic book shop.  Aayla Secura is my favorite Jedi.  This story doesn't disappoint.  Writer Jeremy Barlow definitely captures the character.  Aayla struggles through a range of emotions as a result of her dark times on Kiffex.  Just as she is straightening herself out, Shon-Ju and his actions make her question her decisions and motives.  A lot of character development happens for her in the 76 page book.  There is plenty of action to keep the pages moving too.  Fights, explosions, chases, and some interesting Force training fill the pages.  By the end of the book, you see two new possible threats to the Republic.

You might recognize Brian Koschak's art from other Clone Wars trades.  He creates really expressive characters, and though the style is a little different than I'm used to from the Star Wars comics I've read, I like it.  It has a slight touch of cartoony, but I think that works.  Especially when you consider the younger demographic the book is going after.  I particularly like the detail in the backgrounds; the design of the indoor sets is just beautiful.

If you like the Clone Wars, think about picking it up.  If you have an affinity for Aayla Secura, don't hesitate to buy it!

Trish: Bullied for liking Star Wars...

This is my daughter.  She is in the 3rd grade.  She has been teased for liking Star Wars.  I mentioned it on the message boards over at "Her Universe" and her and I were both delighted with all of the positive and supportive responses we got in return.  Now she is "strong with the force" and doesn't care what those haters think!  I'm sure many of you have seen the article about Katie, the little girl in first grade who is being bullied because of her love of Star Wars.  To read more about her and this issue in particular, check out Bonnie Burton's post on the Star Wars Blog.  Then pass on a little encouragement to Katie and her mom.  We Female Fans must stick together!

Trish: Science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame - Seattle, WA

I was in Seattle this past weekend, visiting my BFF, and on my way to the Space Needle, I happened upon this little Museum
If you are a fan of all things Sci-Fi, this place has it all!  I was very excited to find so many exhibits dedicated to Star Wars.  The place is dedicated to sharing the entire history of Science Fiction and it's influence on the world.
The Museum also houses the Science Fiction Hall of Fame.  And look who I found on the wall:
Many of the exhibits are interactive!  You could check out a model of the Death Star and push a button that would play "The Imperial March".
One of my favorite spots was this Space Ship/Vessel Informational display.  You could pull up any ship from your favorite Sci-Fi movies and get a full run-down on the ship and they would show up on this huge screen:
(It's quite dark inside, that is a shot of an X-Wing)
So, if you're ever in the Seattle area, check this place out!  I had a great time and enjoyed buying some fun Star Wars prizes for my kids in the Museum Gift Shop.

Amy - Star Wars: Visions

There's yet another beautiful Star Wars book out.  I know, you needed another one, right?  Well, I do.  I have this on my wishlist.  This book celebrates 30 years of Star Wars with a lot of artists and styles.  Lucas invited over a 100 artist to contribute new work based on or inspired by the Star Wars universe.  You'll find a wide array of characters and mediums.  Some of the artists include William Stout, H. R. Giger, Julie Bell, Boris Vallejo, and so many more.

Buy it from Amazon.
See lots of images from the book at StarWars.com.

Trish: Star Wars Mommy recommendations...

I'm starting to get in the holiday shopping mode.  With 4 kids, it aint easy and it aint cheap! So if you have a pre-school age child or buddy, I thought I might share some great gift ideas!  Up top is the Star Wars Electronic Jr.  Laptop.  This is about 3 years old!  I bought it for my now, 7 year old when he was 4.  It has the coolest little learning games!  And C-3PO is the narrator.  I know on Amazon, they have the Darth Vader or Clone Trooper versions.
And tonight as I was putting my 4-year old to bed, he wanted to read me his favorite book.  That would be his "Star Wars" ABC book.  He goes around telling people- " A is for Anakin" or  "M is for Millenium Falcon".  I purchased this book from Amazon for under $10.  (Stocking Stuffer?)
Now that I've shared a couple with you, do you have any new things I should consider for my little guy this year?

Amy: Ahsoka's New Look

Star Wars Insider #121 brings us Ahsoka's new look.  In case anyone was doubting whether this image is real, this is directly from StarWars.com - "(and sharp-eyed readers might sneak a peek of Ahsoka's new look debuting later this season!)."

I've seen a lot of people complaining about one feature.  Gasp, horrors - she has cleavage!  How could a 14 year old have cleavage?  First of all, I don't think she's still 14 in this image.  Look at her head-tails.  They are longer and more filled out.  I think she's grown at least a year older.  And also?  There's the whole puberty thing.  With human girls, it can start very young.  Who knows what happens with Togruta females?  Okay, that's a stretch but hopefully you see my point.

I guess maybe people aren't happy about seeing her grow up; this brings us closer to her mysterious fate.  But I sincerely hope everyone realizes that the fact that she has cleavage does not make her any less of a strong female or kick butt Jedi.

Amy: Clone Wars Ladies Tribute

I just stumbled across this on Facebook. This is a lovely tribute sort of video for the strong ladies of The Clone Wars.

Jess: Interview with Ashley Eckstein from NYCC

Beginning of our NYCC coverage!

The audio still needs to be fixed, but there is a transcript posted if you cannot hear at the bottom of this page as well as on the youtube description.

We discuss Ashley's convention experiences, the future of the current line, future licences( SyFy network for the win!), the infamous Mara Jade tee among other things

Other news not from the video:
I got to see some prototypes for the line, which aren't Lucasfilm approved yet so I can't show them to you guys but AMAZING.
Ashley and Dan seem to think that they are done with the current Rebel Alliance necklace. They have a new jewelry designer and we can expect to see a lot more symbols in the future
In the future they want to make more Convention Exclusive items, like the Celebration V necklace. Since I'd imagine that some of us will want things not offered at conventions we are attending, I think I will start up a wait/help list for those. I know Dan mentioned SDCC and next years NYCC. Perhaps I can help people out with NYCC necklaces if they pick me up a SDCC one.

I have some other news as well, but I wanted to get this up for you guys. Transcript it posted below for reference

Transcript:

J: Hi Everybody, We're here with Ashley

A: Hi!

J: It's been one whole convention season for you with the Her Universe Line. What has your reaction been to it?

A: It's been amazing. The Support. The Fans. It's been overwhelming. Between Celebration where we first chatted and Dragon Con and San Diego Comic Con. And it's been amazing, the support from all the fans.

J: Do you find the fans come from a specific area or do they vary coming from all ages and genders?

A: It's really been because our first line is Star Wars, a lot of Star Wars fans and it's been both genders. We've had so many guys who are excited to buy for their significant other or their sister or mom or girlfriend, so that's worked really nice. And then of course the women. We're really creating a community of women and you've been fantastic. Thank you for all of your support. And for spreading the word. And it's just, we are creating a community here.

J: Whose idea was the message board?

A: It was mine. Cause I felt our blog was a bit one sided and we couldn't really have the dialogue going on the comments on the blog. So I wanted to take what was happening on the blog and make it more of an open dialogue. So I felt we needed a message board for that

J: When can we expect to see new merchandise?

A: Well you will see a couple of new things for the holidays. Some come Cyber Monday you will see, that is the monday after Thanksgiving, you will see the new items on our website. And then definitely in the spring, I don't have an exact date probably March/April. We will have probably at least half of our line completely gone and we will have new items. Some items we will keep just because they have been doing so well and some people just haven't gotten them and we will have new Star Wars lines and we are also expanding. It's, it's a definite. We're announcing it next week.

J: I hope it's something I follow. Can we assume it's sci-fi/fantasy?

A: Yes

J: I was talking to your fellow cast member, Anna Graves, who plays Duchess Satine and she has a little daughter, and she was wondering if you will be carrying kid's clothes?

A: Yes, we will be carrying kid's clothes but not little kids. Yeah, we won't be doing babies or toddlers right away but we will be definitely offering our Ahsoka Chibi and our Daddy's Little Girl in kids sizes hopefully sometime soon.

J:She also requested Duchess Satine merchandise too, but she said that's optional.

A: I would love a Satine Necklace.

J: I love her earrings, I think they would translate into a necklace well, She's got a fantastic costume with those flowers sticking out of her head.
A: I love her costume, completely love it.

J: I actually think next week you guys share an episode, right?
A: Yes, it's a good episode for Ahsoka.

J: I have to ask you this question because an onslaught of people are asking about it. What's up with the Mara Jade tee, is it happening, is it not?

A: I kinda opened up my mouth too soon. It is going to happen. I don't have a date for how soon yet. I still don't have a design for it but I'm definitely talking to artists. It's definitely going to happen I just don't have a date. I kinda made it sound like it was happening tomorrow but I wish it was but it's not. But hopefully, I would say next year I will push it forward so I will keep you updated. The second we start designing I will let the fans know.

J: She is so popular for never being in a movie.

A: I can guarantee you she will be the first like expanded universe character that we do.

J: Awesome. I think that's about it, so thank you- I'm sure we will see each other soon.

A: Absolutely. Thank you for you and your support. It's been fantastic. We wouldn't be hear with out the support of the fans.

J: Well. We love you guys and it's where my paycheck goes every week so...

A: (laughing) I'm sorry about that!

J: It's okay, it's well worth it. See you guys, Bye!

Amy: The Jedi Path

The Jedi Path was released last week.  It is as cool as it looks.  The presentation is amazing.  You press a button on the top and the vault opens, the platform lifts, and tada - the secrets of becoming a Jedi are at your fingertips.  The book is equally amazing; in fact, I would gladly take it and leave the vault if I had to make a choice.  The cover feels like leather and the pages look straight out of ancient tome.  The margins are filled with notes from Yoda, Ahsoka, and many other names you'll recognize.  Small artifacts are placed within the pages.  You can find a padawan's braid, a coin, a patch, and lots of extra inserts.  The pages are filled with valuable instructions.  It's a necessity for anyone wanting to learn the secrets.

I have to admit that at first, the price deterred me.  It's not cheap, but neither is what you're getting.  It truly is a quality product; it's obvious that a lot of thought went into the design and layout.  And it is really fun to show your friends (well, as long as they're Star Wars fans) and amaze them.  The most inexpensive place I've found to get it is Amazon.  It's $60 and if you can wait a few days to receive it, you can pick the free super saving shipping option.

Trish: What to be for Halloween....

JUNO ECLIPSE...Captain Juno Eclipse was a female Imperial pilot during the Great Jedi Purge. Following the Bombing of Callos, an early battle in the history of the Galactic Empire, she was tasked with piloting the Rogue Shadow, transport ship of Galen Marek, Darth Vader's secret apprentice. After being branded a traitor by the Dark Lord, Juno joined Marek on his mission to create a Rebel Alliance. During their adventures, Juno and Marek fell in love, but Marek seemingly died fighting the Emperor. Juno was present at the birth of the Alliance to Restore the Republic and went on to become one of the first commanders of the Alliance and the captain of the Salvation. (Wookieepedia)
If you haven't read or played the game, "The Force Unleashed", you need to! This lady ROCKS! And she is a BLONDE female Star Wars character. That means no hair dying or wig-so that will be easier for me! There is a costume available for purchase at Warpdonline - but it's a little out of my price range. So, I'm trying to do this on my own. Wish me luck! I will post pix when I get it all finished! What are you going to be for Halloween?

Amy: Throwing a Star Wars Party

I am a fan of throwing themed parties.  I think the most fun one I have put together is a pirate party.  Recently, I did a very scaled back version of a Star Wars party.  I put up a projector sheet in the backyard, saved some couches from neighborhood dumpsters, and served sugar cookies cut with the awesome Williams Sonoma cutters.  That party was nothing on the Ultimate Star Wars party by justJENN Designs

I've been following her blog for a while because I love her recipes and presentation.  She always takes time to carefully explain how she makes her creations look so awesome.  She has really done something extra awesome this time.  Click on the link above to see what I mean.  There are Yoda Oreos, the cutest Leia Cupcakes, Cloud City Pops... and recipes and instructions to go with each of them.

My next birthday party is going to feature several of those recipes!

Jess: Star Wars In 3D

I know Amy already covered it, but I needed to mention it again because I've been hearing from a few naysayers and I wanted to point this out and it's probably going to be a little wierd for some. When it comes to fans, I am relatively new ( I fell in love in 2005) ,so the only two Star Wars films I have ever seen in the theatre would be ROTS and The Clone Wars animated. And think of the entire new generation thats going to be watching the Clone Wars and beg their parents to take them to see this.

Anyway, I can't wait till 2012.

Amy: Star Wars in 3D

I'm sure by now, you've seen the news - Star Wars is going to be released in 3D.  We get the first film, A Phantom Menace, in 2012.

Most of me is "Yay, Star Wars," but the a small part of me is "meh" about 3D.  It seems like many movies are headed that direction, and I don't think it's always a fit.  Every action movie should not automatically be 3D.  Unless it drastically improves the look and experience of the film, why's it necessary?

It could fit with Star Wars though; there's certainly potential.  And really?  I'll just be thrilled to see them in a theater again. How do you guys feel about it?

Trish: The Wait is over...

STAR WARS THE CLONE WARS SEASON 3 IS HERE!!!
First, I have to say that I loved this season's premiere episode . It took some time to figure everything out and make connections to previous episodes, but the story still captivated me. *SPOILER ALERT* I loved "99" and teared up when he didn't make it.
I'm so excited to see what the Clone Wars is going to throw at us this season.

So to celebrate, we had a little party! I broke out the Star Wars Cookbook:

If you do not have this book yet-GET IT! Especially if you have kids. It is the most fun!

I was going to make the "Boba-fettucini", but got lazy and we decided to order, what we called, "Pizza the Hutt" for dinner:

But I did make the "Wookie Cookies": (so amazingly yummy BTW!)

AND the "Yoda Soda": (surprisingly delicious and refreshing!)

Here's the whole gang ready to dig in: (Notice the ladies are in "Her Universe" shirts and I painted my daughters face to look like Ahsoka)

My hubby took a picture of me enjoying some of the "Yoda Soda":

A little game of Star Wars Monopoly while waiting for the show to start:

Watching the show:

It was a great night! Thanks for letting me share!

Amy: Star Wars Cute

Cute things make me happy.  You combine that with Star Wars, and well, fewer things could make me happier.  On Twitter the other day, someone linked to a package of cute Hello Kitty style Star Wars stickers.  I mean - just look at them.  Then I realized it was a whole Etsy store called Hello Wars.  You can find lots of other sticker styles and adorable jewelry there too.

Jess: Geek/Chic- 1980

Ever since I was a little girl, I loved fashion. I read Vogue, Glamour, InStyle, Cosmopolitan probably since I could read. My favorite part would be when they had this model all dressed up and then they would list where you could get all the things she was wearing. As someone who loves accessorizing, I find a lot of fun in doing this with my Star Wars tee's and I have always wanted to share it. When I recently saw ClubJade's post on nailpolishes inspired by Star Wars, I got the inspiration to finally turn this dream into a reality. Hope you enjoy. I'm going to try to do this every 2 weeks. I would ideally love to do this every week, but I only have a limited amount of Star Wars clothes and , while I salivate at Her Universe, can't afford the whole line (but I can try :D )

1980
This look is called 1980 for a few reasons. Originally this style's name was 1977, but you'll see why I changed it. First off, the shirt has a very retro style look and feel to it. Plaid was also pretty in back then, at least that's what I've been told. But I really liked the way the Her Universe Empire necklace fit in, so with a little modification, I present to you 1980.

Clothes:
Purple Star Wars Tee- Walmart- $7, available currently in all stores
Guess Denim Skirt- Macy's - $36.99, I just happened to have this skirt, but any will do. Or you can do George Lucas circa his entire life and where it with jeans :D
Purple Plaid Vest- Forever 21- $14.50, I can't find this online which kills me. Any purple plaid will work, but I love the look and feel of this. I'm sure it's on their vast website somewhere, I just can't find it.

Jewelry:
Her Universe Empire Strikes Back Necklace- $30- Sold out, but I think the Rebel Alliance Necklace in black would look great with this as well.

Make-Up:
Eyeshadow: Kat Von D's True Romance Eyeshadow Pallet from Sephora- $34 , like the shirt any purple will do, but this pallet gives you the ability to layer giving a multi color look. My pictures don't show it that well, but it's a fantastic pallet. Little side note: of anything I want Ashley and Her Universe to do- I want Star Wars inspired makeup pallets.
Lip Gloss: Bella Pallet from Luna Twilight- $28, available at Nordstrom's as well. I'm not a lipstick person, so I went with gloss here. I didn't know exactly what to use, so I went through all of my make up and found this shade. Yes, it's from a very high end make up line inspired by Twilight, but it's great make up, so I bought it.
Eye Liner was simply the kind you can get at any beauty supply store for a few dollars and the mascara was from Victoria's Secret, nothing special that any makeup can't repeat.

Jess: Off Topic.....

Please take the time to remember those who lost their lives today in the September 11 attacks.

9 years ago today, one of my friends lost her father in the World Trade Center attacks. She was 10 and he was, I believe 35. I've seen her go through everything in life with a smile on, but I know inside how much she wishes her father had been at her graduation this past June. Living 30 minutes from New York City meant many of my family's friends, co-workers, and neighbors lost someone that day. I tell this story because it's easy to lose sight of what we really lost 9 years ago.

So, please just take a moment and think about what happened and how Americans banded together after that, regardless of political party, race or religion, and be proud to be an American.

Trish: It's Time...

Let me explain...
First, Star Wars is something I have loved my whole life and am able to share with my children. It is something we bond with and love!
Second, I grew up in a house with only brothers. My dad is a football fanatic and my brothers did not catch on. But I did! It is something we bond with and love. (49er Faithful)
Third, Yoda is, well, AWESOME! And, as I have shared before, my favorite Star Wars Character.
So, put it all together and I pretty much LOVE this picture!
Tonight is the first game of the season...."Are you ready for some football?" I AM!

Jess: The Clone Wars Season 3 Premiere is a week away!

Just a small reminder that The Clone Wars Season 3 starts a week from today. I know we have been a little slow lately ( I have been SO busy) but we will soon be getting on track and starting regular postings again. In the meantime, check out Shaak Ti!

Jess: Mara Jade Tee coming for Her Universe Next Spring/Summer! (Plus how to help out Shannon McRandle and get an autograph in the process)

Further proof that Ashley Eckstein is our savior sent to us from Lucasfilm heaven. Our prayers(but mostly mine) have been answered.

Out of Dragon*Con- A Mara Jade Tee will be joining Her Universe's line-up next Spring/Summer.

...
...
...

Okay, so I have been informed we have readers as young as 11 (which is AWESOME, btw) so I can't use the words I would normally use to describe something like this happening.

For those of you sitting around and don't realize the .....amazing-ness of this moment, let's take a second.

Mara Jade is one of the most popular Star Wars characters. If you went to C5 you would find that just as many girls costume is Mara as say Padme' or Leia. Why is this? (Because she is bad-a@#ed) It's probably because this character, who has never once graced a Star Wars film or TV show,is probably the coolest rolemodel for young girls when it comes to Star Wars, and Sci Fi in general. Too often are female characters "type casted" into the roles of the damsel in distress. Now you may say "Jess-What about Padme', Leia, Ahsoka, Aayla, and the countless other SW women out there". Of course they are, but Mara Jade is a different type of female hero. She starts at the bottom and builds her way up in life. She's witty and intelligent. She has this internal strength every woman wishes she had. She, while some would argue that it was Thrawn or just Zahn altogether, saved Star Wars in the 1990s. And, while I love Anakin/Padme and Han/Leia, has in my opinion the most amazing love story in all of Star Wars. Because it's not forced. It's probably one of the most natural things to every happen in Star Wars.

Okay...Why do I love Mara Jade so much? When I was about 12, I discovered Star Wars. I saw the movies...yada-yada( I told this story in a previous post already) but when I got into the books, I was a little bored. I liked it, but it wasn't Star Wars for me and I couldn't connect with characters outside of the movies. And then I read Heir to The Empire. And while I loved that book, I loved Mara Jade more. That book made me read Dark Force Rising, and then The Last Command, and then the duology and before you know it, I was so emotionally involved that somehow I ended up here, years later. So I equate much of my Star Wars fandom to Mara Jade.

Speaking of Mara Jade-I was actually going to post this earlier- Shannon McRandle, who was the Mara Jade Decipher model, is selling her autographs for $10 because the place she is renting at has mold and her landlord refused to pay to fix it. She has 3 kids I think, and I think it's important to remember that just cause someone was in Star Wars doesn't mean they are rolling in dough. She's having this sale to raise money to either get a new place or fix the mold I think. You can see it all on her facebook. You can see all the available pictures on Shannonmcrandle.com , pick out which picture you like and send her check/money order for $10 along with a letter requesting the picture you want and a Self Addressed Stamped Envelope. Disregard the fact the site says $15. Shannon will also throw in a free autograph with the purchase, so you actually get 2. I know from past experiences that she is a wonderful lady who is hitting hard times. If you are interested, please check out her site.

Jess: No Love for Girls at McDonalds

So....Star Wars will be returning to the Happy Meal next month, and like always it's the "Boy's Toy". Strawberry Shortcake will be for "Girls". Obviously, this shows that the mainstream media can't accept girls liking something like Star Wars. I will write on this more in the future (short for time but I really wanted to post this). I'm sorry for the lack of posts- I'm going back to school soon, so you can imagine, right?

Hey,

I will get my Celebration V stuff up soon. I am still riding on that high- I can't believe it's over :( Anyway, because I am still in an Empire Strikes Back mood and I am in love with this picture- I am sharing it with you.

Trish: Back to School-Star Wars Style

It's Back to School Week at my house and I just thought I would share some of the cool Star Wars things we picked up this year! You'll notice my son's "Cool" Yoda shirt that he wanted to wear on his first day. We purchased this and other affordable Star Wars shirts at Target. Check out their stuff (http://www.target.com/s?keywords=star+wars&searchNodeID=1041972&ref=sr_bx_1_5&x=16&y=17).
My 4 year old will be starting his Pre-K class too and we got some cool Clone Trooper shoes from Payless (http://www.payless.com/store/catalog/subsubcategory.jsp?trail=1016%3Acat80084&sort=&subCatId=cat80084&catId=cat10091&changedFacetValue=&pageNum=1&brandId=&categoryType=).
And for my middle schooler, we purchased the "Stormtrooper Unmasked" MIMOBOT (http://www.mimoco.com/shop/star-wars). You have a 50/50 chance of getting Han or Luke. We got Han (YAY!)
Many of my friends and family don't understand or appreciate my family's love (obsession) of all things Star Wars. But I knew that many of you would and understand my excitement at having found so many fun things to send to school with my kids!

Jess: Submit Questions to Ask Anna Graves! (Duchess Satine/Sugi from The Clone Wars)

Hey everybody!

I'm still getting around to posting all of my Celebration V stuff ( I still have a lot lefT) but this is something I thought we could have a little fun with. If you didn't know, I run probably the only Duchess Satine fansite-Duchess of Kalevala (linking is being wierd, so it's www.duchessofkalevala.webs.com ) . We are doing an interview with her, but I want to get as many questions as possible going. Satine seems to be featuring largely in Season 3, but I want to stress that no questions about specific details from Season 3 will be asked. Other than that, leave a comment here or on twitter and I will make sure it gets to her. Remember, Anna also played Sugi, the bounty hunter, so you can ask her about that too!

AND to tie it in to Celebration V coverage, here is Dave Filoni talking about what his plans for the future with Satine are. I took this footage with my picture camera, so it's not the best, but the other was home charging to the Last Tour to Endor party.

Amy: 501st TK Project

One of many cool things about attending Celebration V was seeing all the helmets that were part of the 501st TK Project.  As part of this project, all kinds of artists dressed up blank Stormtrooper helmets and the 501st auctioned them at CV.  The proceeds were given to the Make A Wish Foundation.  They raised over $50,000!!

The contributions ranged from Star Wars themed helmets to Avatar to steampunk to sports themed.  I took photos of every single helmet.  I'm sure the people behind me in line were thrilled!  Though, actually, most of them were taking photos too.  Here are some of my favorite helmets:

Star Wars adorable!  This is by Katie Cook.
