Oni Press, ECCC, and Con Harassment

The people that brought you beautiful editions of Scott Pilgrim now bring you convention penalty cards. Based on the same system soccer uses (yellow means briefly stop and think about what you're doing, red means go take a time out you're not five act like a goddamn grownup), I hope to read about them in action at ECCC which starts the 28th of this month.

I'm also very excited about the below image from ECCC. Good job, con, for finally realizing that harassment is a major issue for the largely female cosplaying world. Their policy and this image already have six thousand notes on tumblr.

Clone Wars S6 E1-4

I'm a bit late to the game, but midterms and life and excuses pile up, man. Spoilers are behind the giant bolded warning so read on or forever hold your peace.
I'm incredibly excited to see some loose ends wrap up as I take study breaks from midterms. It's actually really weird not watching these with my ten-year-old brother- we'd watch them as they aired or the next day on-demand. We didn't have cable when the show began so we'd watch them the next day on the Star Wars site with ads and ridiculous lag.

OH NO SPOILERS HIT THE DECK THIS IS VAGUELY LIVEBLOGGING STREAM-OF CONSCIOUSNESS BECAUSE THAT'S HOW I ROLL TODAY

Tiplee's design is really lovely- there have been very few original female aliens in the clone wars and she looks amazing. Her hair makes me think of Valkyrie helmets.

I am very disappointed in how her sister died, because plotwise there was no reason for that to happen. They would have taken it just as seriously had she merely almost died. Why must every female character ever die but we take elaborate lengths to ensure our male heroes die, or even bring them back from normally death-inducing situations ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS (Boba Fett I'm lookin' at you)

I'm also very interested in the reason Tup didn't go after Anakin. Did Sidious really put a back-door if-else statement in that was like BUT NOT THIS JEDI I NEED HIM. If Anakin can't fight off one crazed trooper he really isn't worthy of the Dark Side. Was it because he knew Anakin would probably just kill him? I'm not sure where this episode takes place in the Clone Wars timeline but I'm not sure he ever got that dark before the events of Episode III.

oh no it's not Sidious I hope it's Ventress BUT YEAH SIDIOUS THAT'S WHY YOU DON'T HAVE A PLAN THAT RELIES ON BASICALLY ONLY ONE MAN'S DNA WITH SELECT GENES FROM OTHER DONORS
oh shit I BET IT'S SAVAGE OR THE WITCHES I'D LOVE TO SEE THEM AGAIN

wait did they namedrop the virus in the first Republic Commando book by Karen Traviss?

this show makes me laugh sometimes because it is the distant year two gazillion and three and they're still wearing retro-cool spacesuits. milennia dealing with hard vaccuum and humanity has still found nothing more efficient than a fishbowl helmet.

CONSPIRACY
hell yeah it's shaak ti popping up in the weirdest places since ever

i miss the droid dialouge in this show it's always quality

i have literally never realized that the kamoinans always knew about order 66. yanno, having created them and all. so many pieces are fitting together

FUGITIVE
oh my god i forgot how things are dragged out for the sake of a three-episode arc

like wow was there a deadman on that chip or what

is that actually a ship or is that a glorified escape pod fives does the thing you stole even have hyperdrive

wait why are there bounty hunters on kamino

OH SHIT I DON'T ACTUALLY KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TO FIVES AFTER ORDER 66 OH NO OH NO OH NO

there is literally no reason for this to be a four-part arc

none whatsoever

ORDERS
do all the clones give the little air stewardess spiel or is it just for shaak ti

nothing says I Have Something To Hide like making things surround a suspicious thing go horribly awry
like wouldn't that invite more attn to the case (as in this case)

wowwowowowowow look at all those parallels between the intro to vader scene and this one
is this the exact some secret medical facility in that weird stairwell? is this why shaak ti had to die in that cutscene in rots?

barely getting through closing blast doors has become such a trope i love it

is the location ship part of the inhibitor chip? is that why they had so many problems finding him?

conspiracy theories are such an integral part of the military this is clever on a number of levels

what a funky-lookin ship the hell is that thing what the hell are you flying anakin

WOW THAT WAS REALLY EMOTIONALLY SCARRING I DO NOT THINK THIS COULD HAVE BEEN ON TV AND SHOWN TO ITS 8-12 YEAR OLD INTENDED AUDIENCE

in conclusion: what the hell lucas

Sherlock S3E1: The Empty Hearse (spoiler-free)

here are all the streaming and download links you could ever want
For the purists among us, The Adventure of the Empty House, The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle and The Adventure of the Bruce-Partington Plans were referenced.

And in your female-character report tonight, Mrs Hudson remained a static character, Molly Hooper did not receive fair treatment, and Mary has great potential but therefore will also receive poor treatment.

While beautifully shot as usual with the usual suspects, many things felt slightly out-of-order and out of character. A four out of ten would be kind- watch it to say you did, but don't get your hopes up.

Cowboy Bebop Spoiler-Free Anime Review

being a STEM major and taking midterms is awful but i'M BACK with a marginally less horrible workload
so let's talk about anime because to help me fall asleep and stop the equations churning through my head I've been watching an episode or three of something. Lately that something has been Cowboy Bebop, a singular early 90s anime that was only around for a season and still reruns on adult swim to this very day.
It is a gateway drug to the world of anime. It's even better that the episodes are standalone. You can pick a random episode and not get lost.
It's pretty (dear god those ship designs), clever (explores a lot of philosophical questions) and has both well-developed characters and a consistent plot. It references a lot of things, but you don't need to be the literary type to pick up on all of them. It's rather adult, there's a lot of realistic gore and death and violence and mafia doings (the show IS about bounty hunters) but it's worth it and rarely overdone.
One of the things I love most is its main-character equality- while there aren't a whole lot of named girls in the series, 2/4 crew members are ladies. Faye Valentine in particular is incredibly well-written, she's definitely flawed as are all the main characters but she's never vilified for any sort of 'feminine weakness' and often saves the day by herself or greatly assists.
While you can and should buy the DVDs, the episodes are available on many free anime sites- subbed and low-quality but free. Meet Faye in Session 3 and Edward Wong Hau Pepelu Tivrusky IV in Session 9. Session 19 is by far my favorite.
Do you like film noir, Westerns, music, dystopia, utopia, Star Wars, Star Trek, Firefly (watch this especially if you love Firefly)? Watch Cowboy Bebop.
